Habitat for Humanity of Colorado joins the world in mourning the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
We remember his extraordinary life dedicated to service, community, and the belief that everyone deserves a safe, decent place to call home. Though our hearts are heavy, we are grateful for the immeasurable impact of his leadership and service, and we find comfort knowing he is reunited with his beloved wife, Rosalynn.
A Legacy of Affordable Homeownership
For over 35 years, President and Mrs. Carter served as Habitat for Humanity’s most renowned volunteers. Together, they inspired more than 104,000 volunteers in 14 countries, helping to build, renovate, or repair 4,390 homes in partnership with families.
One memorable moment was the 2013 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Denver’s Globeville neighborhood. The Carters, alongside 2,000 volunteers, helped build 11 new homes and repair 15 others, leaving a lasting impact on the community. Their dedication inspired all who worked alongside them.
As Karen Kallenberg, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Colorado, reflects:
“President Carter exemplifies the best in humanity. He used his platform to help elevate causes dear to his and Mrs. Carter’s hearts, including affordable homeownership. His Habitat legacy will live on in the numerous staff, volunteers, and homeowners his work touched.”
Transforming Lives Globally
President Carter and Rosalynn’s journey with Habitat began in 1984, near their Georgia home, and soon expanded globally. That same year, they led Habitat’s first Jimmy Carter Work Project in New York City, transforming an abandoned building into affordable homes.
Over the decades, their commitment brought worldwide attention to the urgent need for affordable housing, helping Habitat serve over 46 million people worldwide. Their annual projects became a symbol of hope and unity for families and volunteers alike.
A Call to Service
President Carter believed in the power of working side by side with homeowners to build not just houses, but hope and opportunity:
“I haven’t been on a Habitat project that I wasn’t thrilled and inspired, and wept.”
In 2016, Habitat named President and Mrs. Carter as the inaugural Habitat Humanitarians, recognizing their unparalleled dedication to Habitat’s vision: a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
